2A - Bug List

20 bugs and why they exists:
1.    Slow drivers in the left-hand land on I-75.
WHY it exists: slower drivers are supposed to stay in the right-hand lane. Foreign travelers may not know this rule. Slow truck drivers are in the right hand lane and people need to get around them.
2.    When your roommates leave dirty dishes in the sink for over a day.
WHY it exists: They might be in a rush to get out of the house. Don’t have time to clean it and leave it for when they do have time.
3.    Having to park a mile away from my apartment complex because there is zero parking close by.
WHY it exists: Not enough parking spaces. More people living in the complex than there are spaces available to park. I get home from work pretty late, so by them everyone is already home and eating dinner, so I miss out on the close parking spots.
4.    When my roommates are extremely loud and I can hear everything through the walls when I’m trying to study.
WHY it exists: My roommates don’t take school as seriously as I do and have people over all the time. Apartments are made quickly and with cheap material compared to a nice house, so this can also have something to do with me hearing everything.
5.    Dirty bathroom toilet seats
WHY it exists: People are messy and don’t care if they make a mess in a public place. The bowls are not wide enough for people. Waste can splash out and on to the toilet seat. There is no one to clean the toilets on an hourly basis. Companies might not be able to afford someone cleaning their bathrooms all together and have regular employees doing it that might not know how to properly clean.
6.    The unreliable busses that pick up from my apartment complex.
WHY it exists: Traffic could be bad that morning or the busses may have a lot of people to pick up that morning, making them run later than said. The bus drivers may need a break for food or the bathroom.
7.    Having any exam at 8:20 at night at UF
WHY it exists: Regular classes might not have a long enough block that meets and online classes don’t even meet, so they must schedule exams at night. The University of Florida is so big and classes are extremely large, that exams must be scheduled at night in order to fit everyone in.
8.    The lack of parking at Sun Country Gymnastics where I work every day and am forced to park all the way down the street.
WHY it exists: The kids get to practice with their parents so early, that by the time I get there all of the spots are gone. We have so many kids and adults driving to the gym and parking there during practice, that there not enough spots compared to the amount of kids I coach.
9.    Gross gas station pumps
WHY it exists: Everyone needs gas in order to drive their cars, so gas stations are consistently busy with so many people touching and using the pumps. No employee or person actual cleans the handles that we are required to touch. People don’t really care about keeping it clean, it’s just a gas handle.
10. When people pick the treadmill right next to yours at the gym, when there are plenty of open ones not directly next to yours.
WHY it exists: They clearly don’t have a problem working out so close to someone else. Maybe they feel more motivated. They may not know the “rule” to never pick a treadmill or elliptical right next to others when there’s plenty open. The rule to always leave room.
11. When people are talking on the phone in the workout gym.
WHY it exists: People are busy and have to talk to people. It may distract them from their workout, making it easier for them to complete.
12. When your apartment complex floods every time it rains and you get your shoes soaked.
WHY it exists: Clearly there is bad drainage problems that need to be fixed. There could possibly be something clogging the drain that is causing it to back up onto the side walk and street. Could be leaves from the huge trees outside or an animal.
13.  When people in Marston Library basement are on their phones having a conversation when you’re trying to study.
WHY it exists: People are busy and may be talking to someone important. They could be asking for help from someone. Some people don’t find it annoying or it doesn’t bug them to hear people talking on the phone. It is super easy to get distracted while on your phone and the next thing you know your texting and talking.
14.  The lake of parking available on campus.
WHY it exists: There are so many students at UF. Way more students than actual parking spaces available.
15.  So many trucks on the turnpike, slowing down all traffic.
WHY it exists: Companies need to get supplies, food, and things to their companies and they make truck drivers deliver it. So many things are delivered on trucks. With so many slow truck drivers people driving get stuck behind them and they cause everyone to slow down, until they are able to get around them and to the next truck.
16. The lack of cheap, but healthy dinner places in Gainesville.
WHY it exists: The fast food industry is huge, and although some places offer healthier options, the vast majority are still unhealthy. The places that do sell healthy food, make their prices extremely high, because they know people will still buy it because its healthier. Ex: Acai Bowls.
17. The overwhelming amount of people on Archer road during rush hour.
WHY it exists: Archer is the mail road into and out of Gainesville, that has everything anyone might need. Shopping places, food, grocery stores, etc. During rush hour everyone is trying to get home or get food, so Archer backs up and traffic gets bad.
18. When you’re in the Oaks Mall I’m Gainesville and you are ready to try on clothes at a specific store, but you can’t find an employee to open up the fitting room for you.
WHY it exists: Stores within malls don’t have that many people working for them so an employee can’t just sit by the fitting rooms all day letting people in. Most of the time stores count how many items you are taking in to make sure you don’t steal anything.
19. When people park on the white line and think it’s okay.
WHY it exists: They could have a bigger car, like a truck. People don’t realize they aren’t parked in the white lines or are in a huge rush and don’t have time to fix their parking.
20. The extremely long lines to get into any bar at midtown on a Friday or Saturday night.
WHY it exists: Bars at midtown are only allowed to have a certain number of people in them until it becomes a safety hazard, so bars have to slowly let people in, while others leave. There also aren’t a huge number of bars at midtown, so they fill up very quickly.

Reflection:

Overall, I thought parts of this exercise were easy, while other parts were very challenging. I had an easy time coming up with 15 things that bug me, but got stuck and couldn’t think of 5 more bugs. I also had a really hard time coming up with the WHY each bug exists. I never really think about why a problem exists and why that problem bugs me, so it was hard for me complete this part of the assignment. Although some parts of the assignment were challenging for me, I really enjoyed it. It really did force me to look at the world around me differently!!

  1. Natalie-

By reading your post, I am somewhat thankful I don't live in Gainesville although I haven't been able to escape the parking or traffic horror when I come into town for games and to visit friends. I also struggled with the "why" portion of the assignment. My struggle was mainly because I didn't want to assume the reasons why. For example, its really easy for me to say someone is lazy for not cleaning up, but maybe they have plans to clean it at another time or have other pressing obligations at the time. Great post, thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Natalie-
Reading through your list of bugs I have found a surprising amount that I can completely relate to. Specifically #13 is always a bother for me since I primarily study in Marston Library. A lot of the bugs on this list are related to driving in Gainesville which makes me very grateful that I do not have a car at school! Hopefully some of these issues will resolve by next semester!
